Valokuvataiteen museo – The Finnish Museum of Photography
Admittedly, photography is not the art form I feel closest to. But since it traditionally has a very good standing in the Scandinavian countries and Finland, I was very curious about the Finnish Museum of Photography. And I wasn't disappointed - the small museum, located in an old cable factory, currently hosts three exhibitions.
The first one is an exhibition of works by Vivian Maier, "The Self-portrait and its Double" (until May 24th). I am really not an expert on her or her work; but what I do know is that she was a nanny all her life, and her work was almost lost when the storage where she kept her photographs was closed due to unpaid rent. The exhibition shows what Vivian Maier is known for: everyday scenes in which either the photographer's shadow or a more or less small reflection of herself with a neutrally questioning look on her face appears, and which deal in an absolutely non-sensationalistic way with the issues of existence, visibility and the opposite as a mirror.
The second and smallest exhibition, "Documenting the Body" (also until May 24th) traces the history of the passport in Finland, although I assume that the development in other European countries has been similar. The compilation is interesting as it crystallizes the process of how identity is tried to be fixated on physical features and the face, as well as the attempt to create an absolute image of something that is constantly changing, such as the body.
The third exhibition, "Unfold" (until March 22nd), consists of diploma works of Aalto University’s photography. The title is well chosen: For, on the one hand, a kind of core can already be seen in the works, on the other hand, one still has the impression of looking at a development, a reaching and searching process. The pieces themselves are totally varied - from abstract photography to documentation and staging, everything is included.
