Walking the Plank

Patrick Baumüller

It is no easy task to put art in the service of ecology and consumer criticism, and not become too educational and bland. But Patrick Baumüller succeeds beautifully in his exhibition "Walking the Plank" at Galerie Michaela Stock until the end of August. Only at second glance do we realize that the "Trojan Horse" consists of casts of packaging from a Chinese fast food chain - it looks colourful and funny on his skateboard, but are we aware of the extent and impact that cheap mass production and over-consumption have on the planet and our lives? The small sculptures dragon, tongue snake and bowl are made out of these empty packaging capsules as well, only that these three actually look like ancient Chinese art objects at first.

The five wooden boards of "Memento Boardi", on the other hand, are a kind of processual and movable notebook by Patrick Baumüller - an interface of inside and outside, medium and content, thought and materialization. In the second gallery space, the topic of movement is continued: here we encounter the Tyrolean artist’s kinetic objects, such as the nodding devotional kinetic, or "Dice Me Nice" - an installation in which cubes are set in motion by infrasound in order to determine fate as randomly as possible.

Things are (still) in abeyance, not yet decided, not yet concluded - whether we follow the path to the end of the plank, and ultimately beyond, is up to us.
