55 Dates

55 Dates – or rather, possibly, Speed Dates. To be honest this overview assembling 55 highlights from the MUMOK`s collection left me a little bit at a loss.

On the one side, of course, the concept works out: the dense hanging - partly on construction hoardings and, at least at first sight, randomly chosen – manage to break the works out of their temporal settings and stress the impossibility of looking at them isolatedly. It is, too, a collection of modern art´s who is who: the exhibition assembles Nam June Paik and Andy Warhol, Richard Gerstl as well as Cosima von Bonin, to name only a few.

On the other side, though, this buildup leaves a pell-mell impression and doesn´t really treat all the works favourably.

I only found out after my visit that the original intention has been to provide a lexicalic overview with the audience first consulting the catalogue and just later having a  look at the real artworks.  My fault probably. In fact, though, this exhibition rather left me to ponder over the old question of art and its aura again.
