Death to Pigs

Ydessa Hendeles

For no reason whatsoever I nearly missed Ydessa Hendeles show „Death to Pigs“ at Kunsthalle Wien. This really would have been a pity, as it is a great and interesting show, and I haven´t seen something similar in Vienna, yet.

Hendeles´ artistic media is the making of exhibitions itself.  For this she uses - in the dark and only spotlighted rooms - manikins of all sizes, old toys, enlarged prints and tools of everyday life and curiosities of times past. She stages them and thus creates new contexts and interrelations. If you walk throught the exhibition without having read the explanatorial text first, you´re instantly immersed into an sinistre echo of childhood. The hints in the installations themselves are – at least at first – very subtle; but after having read the text, one realises to which brutal significations they allude. In reality, this universe reminding of  Švankmajer´s movies enhances the narrations of in- and exclusion that Ydessa Hendeles, daughter of two Holocaust-survivors, wishes to tell, giving us a cold thrill down our backs now and again.

A silent but echoing exhibition.
