Imperial – Majestic – Magical

Axel Hütte

With „Imperial – Majestic – Magical“ Kunsthalle Krems shows a beautiful overview of the work of one of the photographers emerged from Düsseldorf´s Becher-school, namely Axel Hütte. Already the first room honours the exhibition´s title: we see shots of mountains and alpine landscapes – sublime, precise, shrouded by mist – and it takes a little while to perceive the reduced but very rich colour palette. (I somehow, too, had the impression of the pictures being visual aids. If I myself stood there, in front of these panoramas, in the wind and in the cold – I don´t think I could perceive them the way they are in the photographs.) After these grand views the continuing portrait series, or the people in them, with their fashion, art and make-up, seem a little bit petty and small. This by no way is the photographs´ fault, but due to the order in which the single work complexes are shown. There is, though, another portrait series (at least by name) for which Axel Hütte photographed park landscapes with dressed or nude women in them, mirrored in water. These pictures are of a very dream-like and inwardly quality.

Very different, again, are the pictures of a strangely de-peopled Venice, or the photographs of Austrian „glorious“ buildings like the Belvedere or Stift Seitenstetten (but also  Hotel Sacher has joined the circle) especially made for the exhibition. Their stern conception and the fact that some of them are printed on metal or glass stress the baroque „lewdness“ of colours or the interior luxuriance even more.

In addition, some of Axel Hütte´s lesser known video work can be seen, too.
