Null und Etwas
Magda Csutak´s work is rather intricate and difficult to explain. Well, here´s an attempt, anyway:
Magda Csutak, who was born in Romania in 1945 but lives in Vienna for already quite some time, translates mathematics into art, in a very sensual manner, and thus approaches it towards language. There are three cores to her work: material (both as corporeal and incorporeal materialization), null (or zero, or nothing, often represented by an ellipse), and the question of image and reproduction that separates Csutak´s artistic work from her scientific interests. The pieces circling around these three issues construct an ongoing system and combine elements that otherwise would have remained separate. (As mathematically non-accomplished person I do in a way imagine that this putting things in relation is one of the main tasks of mathematics – simliar, maybe, to language.) The materials Csutak uses also constitute and carry the contents, as, for instance, in the work „Porzellanpapyrus“ which points towards the cultural history of script and writing.
Between these poles, a severe and neutral, but incredibly clear poetry emerges, that can also be perceived by non-scientists. Until April 20th Viennese Christine König Galerie show a selection from Magda Csutak´s work.
